Domestic Air-travel to Surat Thani followed by bus/ferry transfer to Koh Samui.
Suvarnabhumi Airport covers an area of some 20,000 rais (8,000 acres). The new international airport is located about 15 km of on the east-bound Bangna-Trat Highway in Bang Phli District, Samut Prakarn Province and is about 25 km. from downtown Bangkok, Thailand.
It is accessible via five routes.
Suvarnabhumi Meaning 'a Golden Land'. 'Suvarnabhumi' is the new airport's name graciously blessed by His Majesty the King on September 29, 2000.
Suvarnabhumi denotes a fertile land where inhabitants live peacefully as well as a business hub from which the economy thrives.
The new airport has an initial capacity of 45 million annual passengers, 76 flights an hour and over 3 million tons of cargo. The airport has two runways with a distance width of 2,200 meters, each 3,700 meters and 4,000 meters long, able to accommodate A380. Also included are 51 aircraft stands with aerobridge gates of which 4 are designed to handle the super jumbo Airbus A380 and 69 remote parking bays and 2 car parking buildings connected to the passenger terminal to serve over 5,000 cars. A gross 563,000-square-meter area is set for an assortment of 24/7 Duty Free shops. The completed project will feature 4 runways totally, resulting in an ultimate capacity of 100 million annual passengers, 112 flights an hour and 6.4 million tons of cargo.

Flight to Surat Thani - transfer to Samui:
Or you can fly to Surat Thani (Thai Airways or One To Go). From the airport there are minibuses which shuttle up to Donsak's port, the ferry boats place of departure.
Make Sure not to go by evening flights because you won't be able to catch a ferry boat to Samui and you have to spend a night in Surat Thani [images - route map].

BY TRAIN, BANGKOK - SURAT THANI - SAMUI - KOH PHANGAN - KOH TAO
There are many trains running throughout the day from Bangkok to Surat Thani and return. The Surat Thani train station is about an hour from the ferry pier where you catch the boat to Koh Samui. You will need transportation from the railway station to the pier. The most popular trains are the sleeper trains where you travel at night and arrive in either Bangkok or Surat Thani in the morning.
While the trip is long and the noise of the train may wake you up often, new friendships are sometimes made during the journey. Don't forget to take a bottle of water and tissue paper on board with you. 
The conductor will wake you prior to your early morning arrival in Suratthani, but you might want to take a small alarm clock with you in case.When you disembark at Suratthani, employees of the bus company will be waiting to stow your bags in the correct bus that will take you to the ferry pier for the boat ride to Koh Samui.
When you board the ferry, if you're still sleepy, you can buy a seat in the "VIP" air-con lounge for 40 baht. The seats recline and are very comfortable.
These Rail-Bus-Ferry tickets can be purchased at the train station in Bangkok. For the return trip from Samui, you can buy them on the island at Tropical Easy Travel and though other travel agents.
SAMUI BY BUS
BANGKOK-PHUKET-KRABI-SURAT THANI-KOH LANTA-HAT YAI...
The bus is the cheapest but least comfortable option to get to Samui. Buses leave from Bangkok's Southern bus terminal and take around 12-13 hours, again it is well worth avoiding any hassle by buying a combination ticket. Expect to pay around 800 baht for a VIP bus*, and certainly spending a few baht more can help to make your journey a little more comfortable. It is possible to get private bus services from Khao San Road, but their reliability and quality tends to vary hugely.
It is worth taking the overnight bus, as you may get more peace on board when the video gets switched off. You can get a bus or combo ticket at relatively short notice at one of dozens of travel agents on the Khao San road or in the Sukhumwit area.
Alternatively take a taxi to the Southern Bus Terminus (across the Chao Praya river), where buses leave hourly to the South, between 6am and 9pmSimilar multi-leg arrangements can easily be made from travel agents in Phuket and Krabi and even on Koh Phi Phi and Koh Lanta.

There are invariably a couple of hours in total wasted from waiting around. Don Sak is the busiest and closest to Samui but is a 30 minute drive away, while there are also boats from Ao Ban Don and Tha Thong which is closer to Surat Thani town. Khanom is miles away and rarely used. In reality the travel agents in Surat Thani can arrange you transfer and ticket on the next available ferry, but enquire with more than one to ensure they have got it right. Tickets can also be purchased at our office 'Tropical Easy' in Maenam. Ferries are all slow and take about 2.5 hours, but the night sailing takes six hours. Almost all ferries arrive at Nathon town on the west of the island where you will find numerous forms of transport waiting to take you to the beach of your choice.

The price and travel time can vary hugely depending on the boat taken, but the range is from two and a half to six hours and around 150-350 baht.
